2022 HEALTH SCIENCES STUDENT SUCCESS CONFERENCE

The Office of Student Success invites researchers, practitioners, health sciences staff and students to showcase innovations, good practices and services that impact student success and wellness. 

South African universities have been successful in widening formal access and participation of students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds, since 1994. However, epistemological access and success has continued to be associated with privilege. Universities are challenged with how best to adequately support all students for success. There is growing awareness in higher education of the need to be more intentional in facilitating student success. Such success ought to go beyond academic achievement to include student wellness in all its forms. Currently, activities that support student success tend to exist in silos, and conference participation is often a domain for academics and student development practitioners, and not inclusive of some stakeholders involved in activities and services that impact on student success and wellness. Additionally, interventions are not always completely informed by student experiences, and the student voice remains to a large extent, muted. 

This Student Success Conference will be a platform that brings together students, practitioners, service providers and experts in the areas that impact student success and will culminate in holistic caring and supportive approaches to student development. The conference will be an opportunity to show case innovations, high-impact practices and student experiences as they affect overall student success and well-being. The conference will also serve as a forum for participants' personal transformative experience, networking and developing collaborative relationships.
